Wasdale Fell Meats

Wasdale Fell Meats

Based at Wasdale Head Hall Farm at the foot of Scafell, England’s tallest mountain, Wasdale Fell Meats is a family-run business offering the very best in Lakeland-reared lamb and beef.

Farmer Mark Hodgson and his wife Clare set up the business five years ago at their 880 hectare farm, which is owned by the National Trust.

They have 1,000 pure Herdwick sheep, a herd of Galloway cattle, and Aberdeen Angus. They have built up a wide client base, selling to restaurants, pubs, shops, bed and breakfast establishments and to the general public.

They are also involved in a pilot mail-order meat box scheme supplying a selection of their meats, up to 15kg, fresh from the Lake District fells directly to the customer in specially insulated boxes.

The guarantee that their meats go direct from the source to the customer is also attracting interest – and custom – from visitors to the Lake District, who are paying good money for their meat, which Mark said is exquisite and far superior to anything people will purchase in their local supermarket.

Mark and Clare hope to expand their business to customers in the south of the country, particularly London. Their fell-reared meats are hung in the traditional way for at least four weeks, so they are mature and seasoned, and their beef burgers are 100% meat, with no preservatives.

A range of Wasdale Fell Meats are available from the Taste of the Lakes shop, including Herdwick lamb and mutton; Galloway beef and Aberdeen Angus beef.
