Richardsons & Sons
Gerard Richardson is the last independent wine merchant in West Cumbria and sends wines mail order to customers around the world.
Over the years his customers – who come from all over the Globe, from Cumbria to California, to London, Iceland and Canada – have included Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and celebrity chef, Ken Hom.
He has also been a wine advisor to the Icelandic Government.
Gerard started his family-owned, independent fine wine and food business 12 years-ago from his then home, Hensingham Hall in Whitehaven. He then moved into a harbourside warehouse in the town before moving to his new town centre location in Lowther Street.
Everything is selected and tasted by the Richardsons personally prior to listing, from Chateauneuf to Chablis, and his vast collection includes everything from house wine Australian up to first growth Claret. He also stocks port and whisky – with his most expensive bottle being a 40-year-old Glenlivet, a single malt Scotch whisky which is £675 a bottle.
His champagne collection ranges from the “fun through to the whacky and wonderful,” he has a wide range of speciality coffees, including the rare Civet Cat Coffee (which retails at between £18-£40 per 100g, depending on supplies), while his gift baskets and bespoke hampers are among his best sellers.
The Richardson family also run the 1732 Tea Rooms in Queen Street, housed in the stable block of the home where Mildred Gale, grandmother of America’s first president, George Washington, lived.
