Demels

Manel Trepte, founder of Demels, began making Chutney many years ago from recipes handed down through her Sri Lankan family.

Demels

In November 1996, from her home at Ulverston in the Lake District, Manel made her first batch of Chutney for sale. Distribution started locally but soon spread across the country into Yorkshire and as far south as Cheshire. By exhibiting at many shows throughout the country Demels Chutneys became known and were always well received. As demand increased a nationwide distribution system started.

The Company has come a long way since the early days when only Mango Chutneys in Mild and Hot & Spicy versions were available. In 1998, after their successful launch at Earls Court Hotel Olympia, Tomato and a very unusual blend of Date & Lime Pickle Chutneys were introduced. In 1999, following another successful London launch, Apricot & Ginger and Hot Tamarind Chutneys commenced production. In 2000 we extended our range with two new chutneys a Pineapple and Lime Pickle Chutney.

In 2001 we introduced Sweet Mango chutney together with a delicious Aubergine Pickle. All our Chutneys are handmade in small batches in order to maintain subtle individual flavour and quality – a real advantage over mass produced products.

In 2003 Demels was delighted to become a "Rick Stein Food Hero" following Rick's visit to film for his TV show. Manel's Sri Lankan "Fish Curry" recipe is published in "Rick Stein's Food Heroes - Another Helping"
